Cocoa in Africa

Helge Rubinstein tells us that the conquistadors were responsible for introducing cocoa into West Africa, where they planted cocoa tree seeds. (Photographs) I can’t find a direct link with Cortés but there is a link with slavery.

Today four countries in West Africa – the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon – produce about two-thirds of the world’s supply of cocoa. And of these countries the Ivory Coast is the largest supplier, with about 33% of total world production. Europe is the largest market, consuming c.37% of the world crop.
