Coe, Sophie D & Michael D: The True History of Chocolate, Thames & Hudson, London, 1996
Sophie Dobzhansky Coe was a first-generation American, the daughter of Russian émigrés. Born in 1933 she was a trained scientist, a doctor in anthropology, married to a fellow anthropologist, Michael Coe. She developed a scientific interest in food and cooking as they travelled the world, undertaking scientific research. She became interested in the history of cuisines, especially those in the New World, and starting contributing to Petits Propos Culinaires, a journal published three times a year on the history of food and cooking. Then in 1994 she published her first book, and the book on chocolate, completed by her husband, grew out of that research.
